1 – Take the measurements of your room

Take the measurements of your room and write them down on a plan. Then, add the cut-out shapes of your furniture to find their ideal location in the room. This will help you imagine people moving around the furniture or moving around the room.

Identify the places in your room that benefit the most from natural light, from doors or windows, in order to plan the placement of artificial lighting.

3 – Plan your interior design…

You should plan your interior design around objects, furniture or even flooring. Choose these elements based on the style that inspires your decor choice. If you’re looking for ideas, check out Tarkett’s design trends that suit everyone’s tastes.

4 – Choose the colors you want to use

Then choose the colors you want to use in the room. In general, it is better to limit yourself to three colors. You can then experiment and adapt them – see point below.

5 – Create a mosaic of the chosen colors

Create around you a mosaic of materials in these colors to help you represent yourself in this future decor. Remember to take into account the furniture, the curtains, the walls, the floors and the doors… Try to represent the whole thing by taking a few pictures of your room. You will be able to visualize the rendering of colors and tones in space.

6 – Start with the walls

Whether you opt for paint or wallpaper, your walls will certainly bring the main color to the room. You can also keep walls neutral white or gray to show off other colors used elsewhere. Be careful not to over-emphasize these colors, as they might draw too much attention if not balanced out enough by other shades. If you choose a particular color, choose a matte finish that makes it easier to hide small flaws. If you want your room to appear larger, opt for bright or light colors. Create a contrast between the walls and a white ceiling to give volume. You can give an effect of depth, creating, for example, a contrast of colors on the walls facing natural light. You can vary the color by lightening the shade as you get closer to the light and painting the window wall white.

7 – Choose the floor

It’s time to choose the floor. In your mosaic of samples, choose the covering of your floor. Vinyl, laminate and wood come in different decors and designs to help you make your choice. Whatever pattern or texture you are looking for, try to choose flooring that contrasts slightly with your walls, for example, two shades lighter or darker. Don’t forget to think about the effect of natural light on your floor. Varnished or matt floors will give very different effects.

If you opt for a parquet-effect floor, be sure to place the slats parallel to the dominant light. However, if your room is long, you can also place them lengthwise, parallel to the longer side of the room.

8 – Choose the location of your furniture

Once you have created the general decoration, place your furniture. Feel free to experiment with different combinations to see what works best. Complete the interior design with objects. Be careful not to clutter the space with too many objects, and think above all about the balance of colors. For example, a picture and a rug can add the extra 5% of color and give the room its character. Do not forget that curtains are an important element of decor. Their appearance is consistent because fabric does not catch light the way other materials do. They even allow you to vary your lighting by using a veil or tie-back curtains.

9 – Arrange your artificial lighting

Lighting plays a very important role in the room, it shapes the space in the evening and gives a special atmosphere to the space. Since pendant lights tend to visually constrict the room, reserve them for areas where natural light sources are scarcer. Don’t forget to provide enough power outlets. When installing your lights, experiment with varying the light around the room. You can add dimmer switches that allow you to adjust the lighting to create different moods depending on your mood.

Watch out for dazzling lights. If you place more indirect lighting, it will add volume by flooding the walls with light. Also think of the spotlights nestled in the ceiling which diffuse a soft and more directed light. They can highlight an object or a piece of furniture such as a table.

10 – Find your own style
